{South Drive In Flea Market}
The flea market thing is super new for me. I found the idea of purchasing something that someone else is selling street side as kind of confrontational. They have an idea of what they want to sell an item for, and I have a price I want to spend, and somehow, someway, we need to meet in the middle. I got queasy imagining insulting someone or hurting their pride because my value of an item didn't match theirs. I never like garage sales for the same reason. These last two summers I have made a point to go more often (again facing my fear) and I think I have learned a few things for anyone who they themselves feel like a fish out of water at the market.
1. Have a budget.
2. Go looking for something in particular. The amount of stuff is staggering.
3. Bring cash and leave all else at home or at least in your car.
4. Eat before you go and plan on a minimum of 2 hours. Bring water.
5. Dress comfortably and in layers. Good sturdy footwear is essential. Flip flops = bad decision.
6. Be prepared to bargain for a fair price. I always ask first and if I think it's fair I pay it. If not I move on. Someone else will probably have it another time and maybe even at a better price.
7. Get there as early as you can. Avoid the crowds and get the first look.
8. Be super friendly and willing to chat. It's polite and they will be more receptive to your offer.
9. Have a car that can carry what you may find. Borrow something larger or see if a friend wants to go along that has a larger vehicle.
10. When you come across the perfect deal DO NOT WALK AWAY. Buy it then or someone else will.
PS. The penny board above is going for $130 online and we got it for $6. It was worth the trip.
